RUNNING RESOURCES

Training Plans and Race Locators

Active.com - A great resource to find races, training tips, articles, and online communities for running and a wide variety of other sports and activities. If you want feedback about any aspect of running this is the place to look.

Hal Higdon - An incredible resource with training programs for distances from 5K to Ultra Marathon. I followed Hal's plan for my first marathon.

Marathonguide.com - Looking for a new marathon to run? This site details each marathon (US and International) with past participate feedback as well. Very useful.

Runner's World - Website for my favorite running magazine. Chalk full of great stories, resources, and information on all aspects of running.

Gear

Garmin - My training would be twice as hard and half as effective if not for my Garmin Forerunner 305. GPS technology makes tracking your pace and distance easy as pie.

Road ID - A great tool that every runner / walker should use. Wear it like a watch. In an emergency, the RoadID has your medical history and contact information. A must have for every runner.

Pacetat - Designed for marathon and 1/2 marathon races, these cool temporary tattoos have your mile splits for each mile and go on and off easily.

GU Energy - My choice for race fueling. I prefer the chomps because they taste like gummy food.

Runners Edge - My favorite running store in the New York area. Great prices and knowledgeable staff. Online site is good too if you are not a NY local.

Recommended Reading

Daniels' Running Formula - Dr. Jack Daniels' book provides a solid background in the science of the sport and training plans for runners of different levels preparing for races of a variety of lengths.

Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide - Hal Higdon's training guide for covering 26.2 miles. Covers all aspects of training from diet to workouts. A good read for the first timer.

Running and Being - Tells of an educated man's mid-life return to the world of exercise, play and competition. A book filled with beautiful observations and analysis of his new world -- "The world the other side of sweat," as he used to call it, where one can uncover the truths that lie deep within each of us.

Other Resources

WalkJogRun.net - If you don't have the extra cash for a GPS, you can use this site to figure out how far you went. Just trace your route and it will tell you the distance. The application is a little clumsy, but its free!

The McMillan Running Calculator - A cool little tool. Put in your recent race time and the calculator will tell you your estimated time at races of different lengths and your optimal training times for speed work outs, long distance runs, easy runs, etc.

Age-Grade Calculator - What to know how your race times rank against other athletes? Try it out and prepare to be humbled.

Running Quotes - A website full of inspirational running quotes for those days when its hard to get going.

George Sheehan - A website dedicated to the writings and teachings of the late best selling author Dr. George Sheehan.

"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that."
